By Mark Pender

NEW YORK (MNI) - MNI's U.S. retail trade index regained the bulk of the prior week's loss, rising nearly 4-1/2 points to 58.5 in the Aug. 14 period, according to the results of Market News International's weekly survey.

Chains in the week were less downbeat on the second-half outlook, often raising earnings estimates and holding onto sales guidance which is centered on low single-digit same-store gains.

Yet sales are slipping, at +3.2% for total sales, down from the prior week's +3.7%, with same-store sales at +1.4

Current sales rates, at +3.7% year-on-year for total sales and +2.0% for same-store sales, point to disappointment for Friday's retail sales report from the Commerce Department.

By Mark Pender
