European Parliament Backs Barroso For 2nd Term As EU Comm Head

BRUSSELS (MNI) - The Members of the Parliament Wednesday voted to keep Jose Manuel Barroso as President of the European Commission for five more years.

The centre-right Portuguese policitan already has the backing of the European Council, made up of the heads of state from the 27 European Union member states, which endorsed him at their June meeting.

But he faced opposition from several critics, who claim he deferred to EU leaders from larger countries on key issues and wasn't active enough in fighting the financial crisis.

Barroso says he will use his second term - which will run from 2010-2015 - to strengthen Europe's role on the international stage.

"Regulation and supervision have not kept pace with the integration and innovation of financial markets. Not in Europe, not at the global level," he told MEPs in Strasbourg on Tuesday

"The issue of bonuses in particular requires urgent action," Barroso said.
